It depends where you ref
Outside England, most referees whistle for a goal. In England few do.
(I'm ignoring the tight one and focusing on the one that everyone knows has gone into the goal).
I agree with the "English" approach.
Why? Because we do not whistle when the ball has cleary gone out of play for a goal-kick, corner-kick or throw-in. We simply signal the restart.
The ball entering the goal is just the ball going out of play in a particular part of the field of play. I know it is an important part of the field of play, but what value are you adding by whistling? None really, the attackers will know it is a goal because they will be celebrating; the defenders will know it is a goal because they will be commencing the inquest. Those off the field wil know it is a goal from watching the players (if not the ball!).
Only use the whistle when it adds to your control and/or communication. Whistling for an obvious goal does neither.
Finally, referees do not "award" a goal. Players score them and - if they are legal - referees signal (and record) them.

Over here in Colombia they will blow the whistle for just about everything except a goal.
Throw ins (when the ball leaves the field and then when they are about to take it)
Corner kicks (leaves and to start)
Goal kicks (leaves and to restart)
Defensive free kicks (for the foul and then a restart even when it's near the corner flag)
And then obvious ones for substitutions and injuries.
Every time I do a match here I get a few bemused looks from the players when I don't blow for the corners or goal kicks but once they release they appreciate that they don't hear me (even if they can see) every 30 seconds.
But as for goals, generally they don't blow for the obvious ones.

Unless it is an assitants decision, I've never blown for a goal.
I always check with a glance at the assistant, whether club or appointed, and look for a nod or flag before poiting to the centre. Is a good practice to have IMO.

I never blow for a goal.....it's how I was taught by the Army FA.
If the ball is in the net and I've blown my whistle its becuase there has been an infringement leading upto the moment the ball entered the net

The ball is in the net and the goalscorer is the centre of attention. If you blow then you're drawing unneeded attention to yourself.
