The essential part here I think for all of us to learn is "thinking time". Initial look at it says DOGSO all over it but consider that the ball went out of play at a considerable pace suggesting that if the tackle hadn't come in then the blue player would not have had a goal scoring opportunity anyway.

So agree with referee that it was a pen & yellow card

Also if you have NAR it may be worth consulting him/her for their opinion

Can i just go for `straight red`, the defender knew what he was doing, and it looked high and dangerous and stopped any attempt on goal.

You think?

At no point did I think it was DOGSO. It may be red for SFP, but I'd settle for a caution.

Moment or two to spare? Check out my personal referee web site @ Dan-Foster.com

This was a UEFA video shown to a group of northern irish referees.

there was a mixture of reds and yellows but thankfully we all agreed foul...

Andy look at the touch taken its a touch that makes sure to draw the foul out of the defender, and the next action is not going to be a shot on goal, because his touch is too heavy

UEFAs correct outcome - Penalty Kick + Caution

At 1st look i did think possible DOGSO however the touch meant he'd have more chance of knitting soot than shooting at goal.

Pen & yellow and telling the defender he is v.lucky not to be walking
