I dont see a thing wrong with that, if a referee misses a big blatant decision like that then the 4th official drawing his attention to it is only right.

wether the ref takes his opinion is another thing

The laws states the 4th official assists the ref at all times

AND i guess as the commentator says they get the correct decision, even tho it looks AWFUL!!

however...how did he not at very least book Aguero and the other one that gets in his face.

anyone remember Howards Brazil vs Egypt penalty?? looked decidedly like a 4th official at work

I think that the Laws currently do not allow this. The only intervention is in cases of violent conduct (a la Zidane in the last World Cup final).

You can see why the ref missed the handball from his angle, though.

Learning point - use fitness to get a better view either (i) nearer and central, or (ii) wider towards the left wing. Either might have given him a chance of detecting the offence first time, punishing correctly (was it really DOGSO?) and not featuring on YouTube.

Not explicitly, but neither do the Laws state that the fourth official cannot run onto the field of play and start refereeing the game at the same time as his boss. But it does not happen.

The Laws (p53) do list the duties of the fourth official, and the seventh bullet point states that he must indicate to the referee (i) when the wrong player is cautioned because of mistaken identity, (ii) when a player is not sent off having been given a second caution and (iii) when violent conduct takes place out of the view of the referee or assistant referees.

Nothing else.

As of today, the fourth official cannot indicate handball offences. This is a road we should not go down. Can you imagine the pressure the fourth official will be placed under by the manager / coach / physio / kitman and substitutes when the referee does / does not give a major decision that they feel is wrong. Being fourth official is a thankless taks as it is, introduce this and life wil become impossible.

I find it hard to believe that there isn't a single ref in this forum who wouldn't wholeheartedly welcome accurate feedback from his 4th official, especially if the event in question was a possible DOGSO, and if it had been out of the ref's view. It's about getting the right call isn't it? If the 4th official is called on to give his view of a possible DOGSO, shouldn't he speak?

Yes it would be good to get accurate feedback from a colleague to ensure the correct decision was reached.

This will, however, put the 4th official under immense pressure from the club official in the technical area.

The guys on the premier league can handle this and have been trained to handle this; but there are a lot of referees lower down the levels who act as 4th official who are not.

If one mouthy manager screams at the 4th official and gets a decision changed, the opposing (equally mouthy) manager will not be happy.

Be careful what you wish for . . . Whe the referee makes a big call he does not have to spend the rest of the game sandwiched between the technical areas receiving "feedback" from those occupying the technical areas!

Leggy, I'm in wholehearted agreement with you having experienced being 4th man at a reasonable level! I've not yet fully digested FIFA's new law amendment regarding the 4th officials responsibilities but I fear we are heading in a dangerous direction. How can an official stood in a static position at, or about, the half way line, give credible advice on a situation some 60 yards away. I now just think 4th's will now come under even more pressure from occupants of tech areas.
